The Three Forces of Being

The Forces have existed as long as Earth has existed. No one knew they existed, with people thinking that Souls and Rifts were their own separate things, not knowing that they were connected, and that Purity existed. People named the Forces once they discovered how to manipulate Purity, but it wasn’t studied until the early 1700s. The Forces became common knowledge, but many people only knew the very basics, such as the real-world effects, and not advanced knowledge such as Manipulation and the scientific side. It is unknown if the Forces exist outside of Earth.

Purity

Purity is one of the Forces found in Humans. It is found in bloodstreams, with it helping maintain the body. It counteracts the Soul. Purity levels can be raised, but it is near impossible due to the fact that it requires being in contact with a Gem while it is absorbing mass amounts of Purity. Levels above 60% can be dangerous if exposed to mass amounts of Souls and/or Rifts. It can appear as either a white liquid with the same consistency as blood or as a white, slightly transparent energy. Excess Purity is when a person comes into contact with a Gem while a Rift is being sealed, but the Purity never enters their bloodstream. Instead, the Purity rests within whatever part came into contact. The most common point of contact is the hands, with the person’s hands glowing after it happens. If a Horror gains excess Purity, they do not have the Purity rest within them, with it rather “curing” them, similar to how Violet’s “cure” works.

Souls

Souls are the other half of the two Forces found in Humans. A Soul is around the heart, and is counteracted by Purity. A Human can be born without a Soul, but that is incredibly rare and borderline impossible. If so, their Purity levels keep them alive. Only one major person is known to have been born without a Soul, with that being Green. After a Human dies, their Soul moves to Limbo, with the Soul no longer being specifically their Soul. Souls primarily stay in Limbo unless a Rift breaks, to which they have an urge to move to Earth. They appear as a wispy, pink humanoid. They attack Humans due to their low Purity levels. To Humans that cannot see Souls, they appear as floating pink orbs. Souls can be harmed by sharp weapons, other Souls, and Purity. Souls are sealed by Gems, with them then being converted into Purity.

Rifts

Rifts are a break between Limbo and Earth, as well as the third Force of Being. Rifts appear as a cyan tear in the air, usually close to the ground. Through the Rift, Limbo can be seen. They are classified on a 5-star rating system in the Agency. All Humans and Souls cannot go into Rifts, only Rift-Breakers can. Rifts are closed by Gems and converted into Purity. If a Human, Pure, or Horror comes into contact with a Rift, they will contract Rift Disease.

Revival

While it is possible for people to be revived, it is nearly impossible and requires many prerequisites. There exist two types - Purity and Soul Revival.

Purity Revival

For a person to be Purity Revived, they must have certain prerequisites completed. The person being revived must either be a Human or Pure, as Horrors and Rift-Breakers cannot be revived using Purity. Second, the person must have an excess of Purity within them prior to dying. This does not mean they have a high level of Purity, but rather, that they received excess Purity from an external source that did not go into their bloodstream. Once the person dies, their body must be intact, such as their heart, brain, and other organs. For example, they can be missing an arm, but they cannot be missing their head. Their Soul cannot have left their body or have been sealed as well. Purity Revival occurs within 15 minutes of death, with no visible signs that it is occurring. After someone is Purity revived, they gain white hairs (can range from a streak to all of their hair) and pure white eyes. They do not gain any special powers aside from being Purity Revived aside from Basic Purity Manipulation. Revived people will occasionally cough up blood, but it is not enough for concern.

Soul Revival

For a person to be Soul Revived, they must have certain prerequisites completed. The person being revived can only be a Horror. Second, the Horror must still have the second Soul within their body, with their body being intact. For example, they can be missing an arm, but they cannot be missing their head. Soul Revival can be done whenever, as long as the body is relatively not decomposed. After someone is Soul Revived, one or both of their eyes turn completely the color of their Soul, as well as the cracks spreading to their upper arms. They regain their memories prior to dying as well. Along with the physical characteristics, they also gain Basic Soul Manipulation. They are referred to as Revived Horrors. Since Soul Revival is artificial, unlike Purity Revival, Violet is the only person that knows how to accomplish it. Revived people will occasionally cough up blood, but it is not enough to be a concern.

Rift Disease

Anyone besides Rift-Breakers can get Rift Disease. It occurs in a Human once they get into close contact with a Rift, typically physical. A Human can tell if they get it if they get frequent headaches and start getting blind spots, along with heart problems. Rift Disease eats away at the person’s Soul, eventually killing them. There is no known cure for Rift Disease. The time until on person dies depends on how long the person was in contact with the Rift, with the average being about 35 years until death. Death lived for 45 more years until she died after contracting Rift Disease.
